I believe psychotherapy is a journey that can enrich and change lives. It is a treatment that can benefit all individuals, whether living with mental illness or not - a healing practice that necessitates participation and investment from the client. It is a process that can assist clients navigating challenging life circumstances and relationships, changing unhealthy patterns and behaviours, and defining and enhancing character strengths. It is also a journey that can facilitate self-discovery, in a setting that encourages authenticity and self-reflection, so as to uncover that which brings purpose and meaning to life. In this way psychotherapy provides a unique environment that serves as a safe space for individuals to heal, change and flourish.
Psychotherapy makes use of the relationship between the therapist and client to facilitate this process of change. With this understanding, I strongly agree with the premise that the relationship itself is key to a successful therapeutic outcome. Having received an integrative training, I work from the perspective that the client is the expert in their lives, and as Carl Rogers noted “… it is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, and what experiences have been deeply buried”. As such, I believe that the client's background, personality, life circumstance and/or challenge dictate the theoretical perspective employed and therapeutic intervention offered. To this end, and ensuring that all levels of a person’s being and functioning (mental, physical and emotional) are maximised to their full potential, the therapeutic process is tailored specifically to meet each client's needs. Encouraging the unfolding of a healthy, trusting, warm and empathic relationship, I work with clients integrating techniques and key concepts drawn from the major schools of psychotherapeutic thought. |
